How to Wash and Care for Plush Toys

Wash temperature and drying method should match the fabric and filling, not a generic "delicate cycle" guess. Wrong drying, in particular, is the most common cause of mold and permanent flattening in wholesale plush returns.

Machine washing: temperature by fabric

100% polyester minky/velboa: 30-40°C, gentle/delicate cycle, mild detergent, no fabric softener (it coats and stiffens synthetic pile fibers over time). Cotton-blend plush: 30°C max to prevent shrinkage and colour bleed. Always place the toy in a mesh laundry bag — this prevents seam stress from the drum's spin cycle and stops loose threads catching on other laundry.

Drying

Polyester-filled toys: air dry 45-90 minutes, or tumble dry on the lowest heat setting with 2-3 clean tennis-ball-style dryer balls to keep the fill from clumping. Cotton-blend or cotton-filled toys: air dry only, 3-6 hours, ideally near ventilation — tumble-drying cotton pile at high heat causes matting that doesn't recover. Never store a damp toy in a sealed bag or box; residual moisture in filling is the single biggest cause of mold complaints in wholesale returns.

Toys that should NOT go in the washing machine

• Anything with a battery pack, sound module, or music box — surface clean with a damp cloth and mild soap only
• Toys with glued-on (not sewn) plastic or glass safety eyes — machine agitation can pop the adhesive
• Bead/microbead-filled toys — the beads shift and can rupture the inner seam under drum agitation
• Toys with leather, suede, or non-washable trim accessories

For these, spot-clean with a mild detergent solution on a cloth, then air-dry fully before returning to a child, especially one under 3.

Frequency

Toys in daily contact with a child under 3 (crib companions, comfort toys carried everywhere) should be washed every 2-4 weeks. General play toys on a shelf or in a toy box: every 6-8 weeks is sufficient. Wash immediately after any illness, regardless of schedule, using the hottest temperature the fabric label allows.

Preventing wear from repeated washing

To extend a toy's usable life past 20+ wash cycles: always use the mesh bag, avoid fabric softener, dry fully before storage, and rotate between 2-3 toys if one is a daily companion so no single item takes 100% of the wash cycles.
